It’s that time of year! Fall is the favorite time on the farm. However, along with it comes patience and long-suffering. It’s always a huge relief when the crops are out of the field and safely in the bins. Getting there however, is another option.
Over the years, all farmers get antsy when it comes to harvest and spring planting. OMG! Our first harvest on this farm was a nightmare!
1972 was the wettest fall on record. Farmers were hoping for the ground to freeze in order to get the combines rolling.
We were supposed to have another farmer run our crops, since we didn’t own a combine. Well, that never happened,
A local implement business knew my husband was a young, naïve farmer, just beginning to build a business. So he took advantage of him and sold him a nasty combine that he knew was a lemon. Therefore, the dude kept it in the shop forever.
Had it not been for the love and care of his distant bachelor cousins coming to our rescue, we would never have survived. Also, Dale, Ruthie Roberts, and their son Ronnie, our beloved neighbors across the road, got us through that first year.
For the last 3 days, as combines and tractors have been running down our road, my Tom has been sitting….waiting on the JD Mechanic to arrive.
Finally, at 9pm last night, all machinery was ready to roll.
Now I’m sitting here writing, getting over bronchitis. Puppies are at my feet. Pumpkin candles burning. A freshly baked pumpkin pie sits on the counter, calling my name.
My man is a steady monument to patience. He’s learned over the years of long-suffering, that it all works out.
The combine is rolling. Our friends John and Eli, run the bins and gravity wagons. The heart of the farm is once again burning, beating, and humming along.
Being the wife of a farmer is a calling….HELLOOOOO SUE! LOL!
