Lower…The…Mower!

How many times I heard this proverb growing up? How many times have all of us rushed through a test, an activity, all to our dismay. Granny always said,” If you take your time, you’ll never whine!”

How right she was.

After I married Mr. Moo Cow, I did things that I never imagined were possible! Occasionally I drove a tractor. However, that was usually dad and grandpa’s job, until the boys came of age.

Farm kids are so successful as adults, in all walks of life due to the following:

*great parenting

* personal motivation

*usually families of faith

*Given personal responsibilities at a young age.

*great self- confidence

Our eldest son was mowing the yard in First Grade. I thought that my mowing days were over, as the 3 boys took on the job.

However, in August the boys had football. So I once again took on the job of mowing the yard.

My hubby had gotten a new mower. He went all over the new gadgets etc. Of course I new everything! Just ask me! Man did I ever swallow humble pills that day!

We had a houseful of people coming for the weekend. My mind was on fixing meals later that day, and getting the house in order.

I mowed for half an hour. I saw a bit of grass spitting out the side so I assumed the following: “Hum? New mower, grass not that tall, guess that’s the way it goes?” NOT! “If I get this done quickly I can get busy in the house.”

I’m singing, listening to my headset. “I’m walking on Sunshine Whoa OH!” I figured I’d have this done in a heartbeat. Tom was in the back baling hay. ”He’ll be so proud of me.”

I went in showered, fixed a meal and started working in the house. I was on cloud nine, until I heard a blast on the truck horn.

Get this picture..husband frowning…waving his arms…shaking his head..”WHAT NOW?” I screamed. “I thought you mowed?” “I did! Got a problem with that?” “Ugh! Did you think about lowering the mower?” “I did? I did? I didn’t?”

“Ugh! No you didn’t. It’s not like the old one with just one setting” “Ohhhhhh guess it’s time to eat some crow?” “Looks like you’ve got a job to do, Mom. Next time, don’t be in such a hurry!”

Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. I had to repeat the job, take another shower, then finish plans for the evening.

Next time you’re in a hurry, stop, take a deep breath, and think things through before you make a choice.

May God inspire you to take your time, and not make quick, rash judgments. Life begins when you make choices. If you ask Him, His timing is always the perfect time.

Love,

Granny
