Tech era verses….true socialization…
It’s called CONVERSATION WITH REAL PEOPLE!
Yes, I am a Granny. I was born in 1949.I am a post war baby. I am 67.I have enough tech savvy to be getting this job done….with help!
Do I like to take group pics with my friends? Absolutely! However, the Selfie- Generation is over the top.
Tech has created a culture of drama, bullying, and less one on one, when it comes to building relationships.
I want to thank those parents, who are actually being the parents, the Boss, and not the best friend.
To those parents who actually have a tech regimen in your households: God Bless You!
One of my favorite statements that I always exclaimed to our 3 sons is the following: “Right now I don’t care if you like me. If you think I’m mean, I must be doing a great job in God’s eyes.” They all turned out to be good men and educators.
My sister and I both rose in the field of education, due to the fact that we had great communication skills. “Why?”, you ask. We spent a lot of time with elderly family, listened, and were very inquisitive. I so appreciate the wisdom, life lessons, and interaction with family and friends, which formed my character.
I was raised on 15 acres outside of Montgomery, a suburb of Cincinnati. Every weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day, there were picnics at our abode. We played softball, bad mitten, croquet, card-games, laughed, and shared stories.
With the influence of my German ancestry, the food preparation was over the top. We not only feasted on German Potato salad, brats, burgers, and beer, but also Limburger Cheese.
We played, laughed, and had fun!
My paternal grandfather was somewhat of a hero. At 100, he was still walking one mile per day. At 102, I made a tape of him relaying what he had seen in his lifetime. He passed at 106, when I was 38 yrs. old. I spent many hrs. with him and my maternal grandmother. Too me, they were cool, and I wanted to learn from them.
I have a friend that has created a complete non-tech atmosphere with visitors. When you come into her home, all phones go in a basket right by the door. She always says, ”It’s time to visit, and get real.” This was her last resort, after a season of continuous tech interruption from children of ignorant visitors.
Is technology important? Absolutely! It has changed the way the world now exists. It’s a totally different world now, than it was when I was in college.
Encourage your children to read. One of my favorite autobiographies, is the Life of Ben Cason.
As an Afro-American child, raised in the projects of Detroit, he was surrounded by poverty and the gang culture……BUT GOD!
Ben had a very Godly, hard-working, illiterate, Christian mother, who enforced reading in her household. TV was restricted to a minimum. Need I say more? From the projects, to becoming one of the top neurosurgeon in the world, and now in the President’s cabinet, Ben Carson has touched many lives. Yes, he used tech, but his mother had a regimen.
Yes, technology can bring the world, and it’s education, at the touch of a button. However if you allow it, your kids will live on their phones and computers.
My suggestion: Spend more time with your kids doing family activities. As our boys were growing up, we lived on the football field, and I don’t regret one minute of it.
They also spent a lot of time farming and learning life lessons from their father and grandfather. We built a regimen. TV and video games were limited.
I promise you, if you give your kids more family time, and less media, your household will reflect peace and prosperity.
Love,
Granny
